Introduction to Balkan Singing

Come acquaint yourself with an invigorating and unique vocal style, wrap your mind and mouth around new languages, and get a visceral glimpse into other cultures! We will learn songs from Bulgaria, Ukraine, Croatia, and Georgia (and maybe more). The harmonies and the styles in which these songs are sung are evocative and vibrant, making for a singing experience that many find exhilarating and delightful. Singing these songs is a beautiful way to honor and keep alive cultural traditions.

We will learn primarily through oral tradition of call and response--no music reading required. You will get sheets with lyrics, as we will be singing in unfamiliar languages, and seeing the words typed out can help in understanding and learning.

Sophie Rog has studied and shared these styles for over eight years and sung with Sevda Choir, directed by Willa Roberts, in Santa Fe, NM. It is her great delight to share this music in her hometown.
